Clinical Pilates

Introducing Physiotherapy-Led Clinical Pilates at Physio and Fitness

Led by Gemma Berry, Physiotherapist and Exercise Physiologist, our Clinical Pilates program is grounded in over 25 years of clinical experience and a deep understanding of human movement, pain, and recovery.
Gemma brings extensive expertise using physiotherapy-led Clinical Pilates to support a wide and diverse clientele, including those living with chronic pain, sporting, workplace and motor vehicle injuries, athletes, the ageing adult, and pre- and post-natal clients. Her practice also strongly supports individuals managing anxiety, ASD, ADHD, and mental health challenges, with a calm, inclusive, and evidence-based approach.
Every session is purposeful, individualised, and clinically informed — focused on restoring confidence in movement, building strength and resilience, and supporting long-term physical and mental wellbeing

What is Clinical Pilates?

Clinical Pilates is Pilates taught with clinical reasoning. It is led by physiotherapists or exercise physiologists, rather than delivered as a general fitness class. Unlike regular Pilates, Clinical Pilates begins with an individual assessment of posture, movement, strength, and control. Exercises are then carefully selected to address pain, weakness, injury, or movement limitations—such as core instability, pelvic floor dysfunction, or postural imbalances. The individual program is designed to achieve the clients goals whilst addressing the deficits. Each participant follows a personalised program, not a one-size-fits-all routine.
The primary goal is rehabilitation, pain reduction, and improved daily function, rather than fitness alone.

How Clinical Pilates Differs from Regular Mat, Reformer or Functional Pilates

Assessment first
Clinical Pilates starts with a physiotherapist assessment. Regular Pilates typically begins with a general group class.

Goal-driven
Programs are designed around specific rehabilitation or lifestyle goals—such as reducing back pain, improving pelvic control, or restoring safe movement patterns, getting up from the ground, strength for travelling, mental health and mindfulness.

Progress is measured
Pain levels, function, and movement quality are tracked over time so improvements are measurable and meaningful.

Safety and modification
Exercises are adapted for pregnancy, post-surgery, chronic pain, spinal conditions, or pelvic health concerns.

Clinician-led
Sessions are taught or overseen by physiotherapists or exercise physiologists, ensuring medical insight guides every exercise.

Health Fund Rebates Available
Many health funds offer rebates for small group and 1:1 clinical pilates classes run by a physiotherapist (and many by and exercise physiologist), using the code “560”. Rebates will vary by health fund.

Equipment Based
Spring loaded equipment allows the physiotherapist to vary the resistance appropriately so that each individual is challenged according to their own abilities. This variability also provides opportunity for strength or increased stability attention in the session.

Who Is Clinical Pilates For?

Clinical Pilates is ideal for:

  • People with chronic or recurring pain
  • Those recovering from injury or surgery
  • Pregnant clients or new mothers needing pelvic support
  • Beginners wanting a medically informed and safe start
  • Individuals who want personalised care and don’t enjoy the gym environment
  • Anyone seeking movement tailored to their own health and wellbeing goals

It’s not just for the super fit. People of all ages and backgrounds—including dancers and active individuals—value Clinical Pilates for its adaptability and precision.

Evidence-Based and Therapeutic

Clinical Pilates is an evidence-based form of exercise therapy, supported by research showing benefits for pain management, core stability, mobility, and functional strength. It bridges the gap between injury rehabilitation and long-term movement confidence.
Physiotherapists play a central role—assessing, prescribing, and modifying exercises to suit individual needs. Their expertise is especially important for adapting movement in cases such as joint replacements, disc injuries, chronic pain or pelvic floor dysfunction.
Programs are continually reviewed and progressed, ensuring your plan evolves as your body changes and strengthens.

How do I start?

Clinical Pilates also supports mental wellbeing. Controlled breathing, mindful movement, and body awareness can reduce stress, improve focus, and enhance overall quality of life. It’s a holistic approach that nurtures both body and mind.

A Bridge to Lifelong Movement

Clinical Pilates is more than just exercise—it’s a pathway from recovery to long-term health. With physiotherapy-guided care, you’ll develop a deeper understanding of your body, move with greater confidence, and build a strong, resilient foundation for everyday life.
